IOTA: DATA - Commissioning

IOTA Institute has taken on a commissioning project inviting artists J.R. Carpenter (UK), Jennifer Chan (Ontario), and Liz Solo (Newfoundland) to produce new web-projects. The projects will run under the IOTA: DATA wing, and will include a digital research publication on the topic of web-based art communities, digital aesthetics and the historie(s) of Net Art. Writers announced late 2017. This project is generously supported by the Canada Council for the Arts.

This is a Picture of Wind - Web-based project

(Launching in early 2018)

Within the broad genre of Digital Literature there are numerous streams of practice, ranging from hypertext fiction to code poetry, inclusive of VR narratives, games, animations, installations, combinatorial texts and Twitter bots. J.R. Carpenter merges visual and performing art practices with archival research and experimental writing techniques. Her non-linear, multimedia, computer-generated, print, performance, and web-based works blend theory and practice, physical and digital, image and text.

J.R. Carpenter’s “This is A Picture of Wind” will expand upon a short text written in response to the storms which battered South West England in early 2014. She will look at the paradox presented by wind: how difficult it is to evoke through the materiality of language a force we can only see through its affect. This work will aim to address climate change by picturing through language and data the vast absences left by wind’s wake.

J. R. Carpenter is an award-winning artist, writer, performer, postdoctoral researcher, and maker of maps, zines, books, poetry, short fiction, long fiction, non-fiction, and non-linear, intertextual, hypermedia, and computer-generated narratives.
